New study on the bioeconomy

The Berlin office of genius gmbh has, together with ADVICE PARTNERS GmbH, submitted a study on the potential of the regional bioeconomy in the Berlin and Brandenburg region to ZukunftsAgentur Brandenburg GmbH (ZAB).

The study looks at the current state of development and the future innovation potential of the bioeconomy in the region. The bioeconomy refers to the efficient, sustainable use of biological resources such as plants, animals and micro-organisms. This means that the bioeconomy affects all economic sectors and associated services that produce, process or handle biological resources or use them in any form.

Based on an analysis of the regional research and industrial landscapes in fields of application involving biomass use for energy and materials, and in the area of food, the study identifies innovation and recovery potential for biological resources for the Berlin-Brandenburg region.

With the national innovation strategy (innoBB), the only one of its kind in Germany, the capital and its surrounding area already provide ideal points of contact and instruments for developing a bioeconomy. In addition, the region has an excellent research landscape both in universities and other institutions, and a significant industrial base in innovative fields such as biotechnology, bioenergy and environmental technology – all of which are relevant to the bioeconomy. A result of the analysis: The innoBB, as a basis for strategic cooperation between the countries, can promote the emerging "green" economy in the region – "Green/Clean Technologies". The study provides information on which to base more targeted support for the regional bioeconomy.

The innoBB approach to strategic collaboration between the German states could push forward the development of a sustainable ‘green’ economy, according to one of the findings of the potential analysis. The study was commissioned by ZukunftsAgentur Brandenburg GmbH (ZAB) and was produced with support from the BioTOP Berlin-Brandenburg project at TSB Innovationsagentur Berlin GmbH. It was discussed with relevant departments and science and industry representatives during a presentation.
